LIVE STREAM | Garry Elliott (soloist)
GARRY ELLIOTT has been a full-time freelance professional jazz and classical guitarist since 1980. He studied at the University of Ottawa from 1976 to 1980 where he received a Bachelor of Music degree. He has performed and taught extensively since then. A fixture on the Ottawa music scene, Garry performs regularly with Ottawa’s finest jazz musicians. He has collaborated with Ottawa pianist Steve Boudreau on two CDs – ‘Pre-Dawn Skies’ (2013) which features their original compositions, and ‘Opus 2 – Elliott/Boudreau Quartet’ (2018) featuring bassist Adrian Vedady and drummer Camil Bélisle – and with flute player Gertrude Létourneau on the CD ‘Habanera’ (2009). Garry teaches classical and jazz guitar at Carleton University as well as privately. He has also been a faculty member at the Ottawa JazzWorks Jazz Camp as vocal accompanist and clinician. He has supplemented his studies in jazz with trips to New York which have included lessons with guitarist Gene Bertoncini. He also studied with Mike Longo who was pianist and musical director with Dizzy Gillespie in the 1970’s. These lessons were part of a course called the Rhythmic Nature of Jazz which dealt with the African influence on the foundation of Bebop. From this, Garry has given clinics at various schools and camps in Ottawa. These clinics have proven to be very helpful to the students in gaining a better understanding of swing and groove.
